Male Cosmetic Surgery stats show growing acceptance.

Women may be the pioneers of aesthetic treatments and cosmetic surgery, but in the past few years, men have been boldly exploring the frontier as well. Changes Plastic Surgery & Spa checked into the latest statistics reported for men and plastic surgery by the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS). Our discovery, anti-aging treatments and cosmetic surgery for men are rising at a stellar rate.Dr. Gilbert Lee of Changes Plastic Surgery & Spa in San Diego sees a fair number of men in their practice.  The motivation for men to improve their appearance stems from a variety of things. Some desire a younger appearance in order to maintain a competitive edge in the work force. Others may be back on the dating scene after years of marriage and desire a more youthful look.  Some men accompanying their wives or girlfriends on an office visit see the positive outcome and get on board too. For all the reasons men might consider cosmetic surgery, certain procedures are drastically rising.

Male breast reductions accounted for more than 40% of all breast reduction surgeries. That’s nearly 27,500 of the total reported 68,106 procedures — a 35% growth since 2000.  Poor self-esteem factors into some procedures such as Male Breast Reduction.

Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia 1
Excess male breast tissue, a condition called gynecomastia, usually appears early in male adolescence and can also occur in men in their 40’s and older.  Male breast tissue swells due to reduced male hormones (testosterone) or increased female hormones (estrogen).  Sometimes called man boobs, gynecomastia can be quite embarrassing for a male.  Male breast reduction is most often performed using liposuction.

A greater number of men are exploring Botox treatments, and the ASPS statistics show a meteoric rise. Affectionately called “Brotox” because of its gaining popularity with the boys, Botox and Dysport are two wrinkle relaxing agents. Quick injections into the forehead and crow’s feet can be performed with no sign of treatment or downtime.  The effects of Botox or Dysport come on gradually, diminishing forehead furrows and frown lines.  It’s a stealth move allowing men to fly under the radar while taking away a few years from their appearance.

Excessive underarm and palmar sweating can also be arrested with Botox or Dysport treatments, and Changes Plastic Surgery routinely administers Botox for this condition. This highly effective treatment can keep a man perspiration-free for up to 6 months in these areas (read more).  Botox treatments for men were administered 410,913 times in 2014 – up 337% from 2000.

Manscaping, the affectionate term for male grooming, is leaping from soap and water splashes to more intensive ways of caring for their skin. Laser Skin Resurfacing improves skin quality on a deeper level, removing sun damage, improving texture and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles.  Resurfacing can also eliminate pre-cancerous lesions, and for the guys who have spent many years in the sun, laser skin resurfacing can also be a preventative measure.  Over 70,000 men chose laser skin resurfacing in 2014. Another major increase since 2000 at 227%.

With statistics like these reported from the ASPS and with society on a mission for youth, male cosmetic surgery will likely trend upward and onward. Changes Plastic Surgery & Spa offers a full range of plastic surgery and aesthetic treatments to assist our male patients on their voyage to a more youthful look and increased confidence.
